PS3 goes big so it can go home

The PlayStation3 will feature new, higher capacity hard drives in North America this Fall, according to Sony, making the last place system first in capacity, at least.

Sony will introduce new model PlayStation3s on September 19; the same as the old new models (the "slim" ones), but now to include a 160GB or 320GB hard drive along with a few bundled goodies, optionally.

Sony asserts that the increased HDD space addresses the growing demand for the digital content offered on PlayStation Network, though the increase also allows the PS3 to top at least one spec list, capacity, while it trails in other categories, like sales.

The 160GB model will carry a suggested retail price of some $300. A 360GB model, meanwhile, will come bundled with the forthcoming PlayStationMove motion-sensing controller, a PlayStationEye camera and a copy of Sports Champions, a Wii Sports-like game that utilizes the aforementioned controller and camera. The PS3 Sports Champions Move bundle w/360GBs will retail for $400.

"With the launch of PlayStation Move just around the corner, we're expecting many new consumers to join the PlayStation? family," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president of product marketing. "Also," he added, "as PlayStation Network continues to evolve with exciting new services, the hunger for digital content grows; these larger storage capacities address that demand and encourage consumers to take full advantage of the complete PS3 experience."
